Barry Taylor, director of undergraduate admissions at Florida International University, has been appointed director of undergraduate admissions at UB, effective June 19.

Taylor succeeds Patricia Armstrong, who retired as director of admissions earlier this year after leading UB’s undergraduate admissions efforts for a decade.

Taylor comes to UB after heading up the undergraduate student recruitment operation at FIU for more than four years. He previously had been associate dean in the admissions office at Princeton University and also held admissions positions at Cornell University, Rider University and Tufts University.

As director of undergraduate admissions at UB, Taylor will be responsible for all aspects of domestic student undergraduate recruitment and admissions. He will oversee development of proactive student recruitment initiatives and innovative strategies to promote recognition of the UB brand, as well as increase contacts with prospective students through various media and technologies.

“Our director of admissions plays a very critical and strategic role in terms of shaping our student body,” says Charles F. Zukoski, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “We look forward to working with Barry to enhance our overall admissions program so that we continue to effectively compete for the best and brightest students who will thrive at a major public research university.”

Scott Weber, senior vice provost for academic affairs, notes that in coming from FIU, Taylor has worked at an institution that is similar in many ways to UB: both are urban, public research universities committed to quality teaching, innovative research and engagement with the local and global communities.

“Barry has the background, experience and vision to develop and lead a creative outreach program that will bring to UB the best and the brightest students who will help the university continue toward its goal of sustained academic excellence,” Weber says.

Taylor says he’s looking forward to joining the enrollment division as director of undergraduate admissions. “I am impressed with the professionalism and passion of the staff, and the vision and goals of UB’s leadership,” he says. “I know we can continue to strengthen the UB brand locally, nationally and beyond, and achieve our enrollment objectives.”

Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from Tufts and a certificate in dispute resolution from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell. He also completed graduate work at FIU and at Cornell’s School of Continuing Studies.

He is a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and is a member and former parliamentarian of the Association of Black Admissions and Financial Aid Officers of the Ivy League and Sister Schools.
