The Department of Visual Studies is looking for artists who will use seemingly obsolete art and technology objects to create innovative works that will be displayed in an exhibition, “Cradle to Grave:  Re-Appropriation, Obsolescence and the Arts,” to be held in the Center for the Arts this fall.

Participants must choose one or more items from a collection of objects assembled by Visual Studies staff and create a work of art for the exhibition that incorporates at least one of these items. Among the items to be used are computers, keyboards, 35mm slides, USB and power cords, televisions, VHS tapes, projectors and video camcorders. A complete list is available from exhibition coordinators Natalie Fleming at nmflemin@buffalo.edu and Jeffery Sherven at jsherven@buffalo.edu.

Participants are encouraged to develop work using novel or unconventional approaches to art. Two-dimensional, 3-D and multimedia work will be accepted.

Artists may examine and choose objects for their projects from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 26-30 in the Art Resource Center (ARC), B41 Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Completed work and entry forms must be submitted between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sept. 20 or Sept. 23 in the ARC. Work will not be accepted if submitted after 6 p.m. Sept. 23.

The exhibition will open on Sept. 25 and run through Oct. 19 in the Lower Visual Studies Gallery in the Center for the Arts. For more information, contact Fleming or Sherven.
