Set up your computer - UBmail for Students

Learn how to set up Apple Mail, Outlook 2019 or Thunderbird to send and receive your UBmail for students on your desktop or laptop computer.

Instructions

Configure Outlook 2019

  1. Enable IMAP:
    1. On your computer, open Gmail.
    2. In the top right, click Settings  > See all  settings
    3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
    4. In the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP
    5. Click Save Changes
  2. Open Outlook 2019
  3. Select File >Info
  4. Click Add Account
    • Enter your UBITName followed by @buffalo.edu for Username
    • Enter your UBIT password for password
    • Enter imap.gmail.com for server
    • Enter 993 for port
    • Select SSL for client setting
    • Enter smtp.buffalo.edu for Outgoing or SMTP Server
    • Enter 465 for smtp port
    • Enter ldap.buffalo.edu for directory (if available)
    • Enter o=University at Buffalo, c=us for Search Base/Root (if available)
  5. Check both:
    • My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication
    • Use same settings as my incoming mail server 

Configure Apple Mail

  1. System Preferences > Internet Accounts
  2. Select Google  in the right pane
  3. In the pop-up click Open Safari
  4. Enter your @buffalo.edu email address in the window that appears
  5. Log in using your UBITName and UBIT password
  6. Click Allow to allow MacOS to access your Google account
  7. Select the apps you want to use with this account
  8. Click Done
  9. Check both:
    • My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication
    • Use same settings as my incoming mail server 

Configure Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Enable IMAP:
    1. On your computer, open Gmail.
    2. In the top right, click Settings  > See all  settings
    3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
    4. In the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP
    5. Click Save Changes
  2. Open Thunderbird
  3. Select Add Existing Email Account
  4. Fill in your full name
  5. Enter your UBITName followed by @buffalo.edu as your email address
  6. Click Manual Config
  7. Enter imap.gmail.com for incoming IMAP server
  8. Select SSL/TLS for SSL
  9. Enter smtp.buffalo.edu for outgoing SMTP server
  10. Click Re-Test
  11. Change Authentication drop-down for Incoming IMAP server to OAuth2
  12. Click Done
  13. Enter your @buffalo.edu email address in the window that pops up
  14. Log in using your UBITName and UBIT password
  15. Click Allow to allow Thunderbird to access your Google account
