Editing Personal Websites using an HTML Editor (such as Dreamweaver)

An HTML editor, such as Adobe Dreamweaver, is an "all-in-one" program that handles connecting to a remote server, editing your file and uploading your file to a remote server.

General HTML Editor Settings

Using an HTML editor from off campus?

Run AnyConnect first.

  • Server Name: UBUnix
  • Connect Using: SFTP
  • SFTP Address/FTP Host:
  • Login/Username: your UBITName
  • Password: your UBITName password
  • Initial path/directory: public_html
  • Connection type: SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol)
  • Port: 22


Dreamweaver CS6 Instructions

Create a Site (only needs to be done once)

  1. Select Start > Adobe Dreamweaver CS6
  2. From the splash screen, under the Create New column, select Dreamweaver Site
  3. Enter UBUnix for your site name
  4. Make the default local folder public_html
  5. Click Save
  6. In the lower right corner, select Remote Server from the drop-down menu.
  7. Enter a name such as UBUnix in the Site Name field.
  8. Click define a remote server
  9. Leave the default local folder location
  10. Select Servers
  11. Click +
  12. Select the Basic tab:
    • Server Name: UBUnix
    • Connect using: SFTP
    • SFTP Address: 
    • Username: Enter your UBITName
    • Password: Leave blank
    • Root Directory: public_html

Create or Update a Web Page

  1. Connect to your site in the Files panel to the right:
    1. Click the name of your site in the panel on the right
    2. Click the icon of two plugs underneath the name of your site to connect to the server
    3. Enter your UBITName Password and click OK
  2. Double-click the name of your Web page in the panel on the right. If you are creating a new file, right-click on the folder in the panel on the right and select New File instead
  3. Create or edit your Web page
  4. Select File > Save periodically, and when you are done
  5. Click the file name in the panel on the right to select it
  6. Click the up arrow in the panel on the right to upload the file to UBUnix

Common Questions

Can I download Dreamweaver from UB?

No, but you can use it in public computing sites.

Where can I get free HTML editor software?

A Web search for “free HTML editor” will provide you with alternative programs that you may install directly on your computer.
