Achievements

Achievements allow faculty to issue rewards to students in the forms of badges and certificates.

About Achievements

Faculty can create release criteria for issuing rewards so that students can see what they can earn and what is required of them to do so. Achievements help emphasize learning progression through defined goals.

Creating an Achievement

  1. Under Control Panel select Course Tools > Achievements. The Achievements tool can also be accessed from a content area under the tools action bar.
  2. Click on Create Achievement and choose an Achievement Type from the contextual menu.

    Achievement Types include:
    • Course Completion: The certificate reward is required. An additional badge is optional.
    • Milestone: The reward can only be a badge.
    • Custom: The reward can be a badge, certificate, or both.
  3. Enter a name for the achievement and select a presentation location (a place in your course where students are likely to earn the badge or certificate).
  4. Select whether or not students will see the achievement before earning it.
  5. Describe the achievement (define what you expect students to complete to earn it).
  6. Click Define Triggers to continue.
  7. Enter a Rule Name and define one or more criteria that will trigger the release of the reward (you must define at least one criteria).

    Trigger criteria include:
    • Dates (can be specified in terms of when a reward can start to be available and when a reward is no longer available to students)
    • Group membership or specific users
    • Attempt on a test, survey or assignment
    • Certain grade on a gradable activity
    • "Mark as reviewed" status on a content item
  8. Click Select Reward and choose the reward.
  9. Click Submit to issue the achievement.

A custom image may be upoaded for a badge.

Deleting an Achievement

  1. Under Control Panel select Course Tools > Achievements. The Achievements tool can also be accessed from a content area under the tools action bar.
  2. Select Delete from the achievement's contextual menu.

If you choose to delete an achievement which has already been earned by a student, the associated reward will also be deleted.

Viewing Achievements and Recipients

You can see all of the Achievements defined in your course, as well as a count of recipients for each of the achievements, in the Achievements tool under Course Tools in the Control Panel.

Clicking the Recipients link shows details about those students who have earned the achievement. Clicking a student's name will present that student's view of the My Achievements page.

The Date Received lets instructors know when the students saw the notification of their earning of the achievement. Typically this is immediately upon earning, but in cases where instructor grading or manual awarding was involved, the date received is when a student was shown their achievement reward.
