Early Warning System

Set up rules to enable automatic notifications to students who are not meeting course objectives.

About Early Warning System

The Early Warning System is a rule-driven communication tool that sends email messages to students when criteria for the rule are triggered. Rules can be based on a test score, a due date, or course access.

The Early Warning System does not automatically detect problems and notify students.

The Early Warning System requires the following steps by the instructor:

  • Add Rule.
  • Refresh Rule.
  • View Alerts.
  • Send Email.

Adding a Rule

  1. Select Control Panel > Evaluation > Early Warning System.
  2. Choose Grade Rule, Due Date Rule, or Last Access Rule.
    • Grade Rule: Identifies when student performance on an Assignment, Assessment, or manually graded item is equal to or below a certain level.
    • Due Date Rule: Identifies when a Student does not complete course work when it is due. Due Date Rules cannot be created for manually graded items.
    • Last Access Rule: Identifies the last time a Student accessed the course online.
  3. Complete page options.
  4. Select Submit.

Refreshing Rules

Rules do not continually run in the background checking for new events. Regularly refresh the Early Warning System to run rules and check for events that will trigger a warning.

  1. Select Control Panel > Evaluation > Early Warning System.
  2. Select one or more rules from the list.
  3. Click Refresh on the action bar. The selected rules are run and any events that trigger the rule create a warning.

Viewing Alerts in the Notification Log

The Review Rule Status page lists all the users in the course and identifies whether or not their performance meets the criteria for the rule and lists details regarding performance. The page also shows when the user was last notified regarding their performance.

  1. Select Control Panel > Evaluation > Early Warning System.
  2. Select Review Rule Status from the drop down menu next to the name of the rule.
  3. The Review Rule Status page appears.

Sending Email

  1. Select Control Panel > Evaluation > Early Warning System.
  2. Select Review Rule Status from the drop down menu next to the name of the rule.
  3. Select the users or group of users to notify from the list.
  4. Complete page options.
  5. Select Submit.

Viewing the Notification Log

The Notification Log serves as a record of Early Warning System communications to users. The log is used to confirm that students were made aware of performance problems.

  1. Select Control Panel > Evaluation > Early Warning System.
  2. Choose Notification Log from the action bar.
