Profile, Notification and Account Settings

Establish your identity in Brightspace, how and when you receive notifications, and adjust other account settings.

Adding a Profile Picture

For profile pictures, Brightspace recommends the following:

  • Approximately 100 x 100 pixels.
  • Maximum file size of 1 MB.
  • JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF formats.

You should crop and edit your profile picture before uploading it to Brightspace.

  1. On the minibar, click your name and select Profile.
  2. Click Change Picture.
  3. Click Upload and navigate to an image file on your computer.
  4. Click Upload.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Save and Close.

Notifications

Notifications are automatically generated messages triggered within a course to help you keep up-to-date on changes to your course and upcoming due dates. You can have notifications sent to your UB email or to your mobile device when you have the Pulse app installed.

Instructors no longer have the option to send a copy of an announcement by email.

To receive notifications when new announcements are available or previously posted announcements are updated in a course, a student must set the following Instant Notifications:

  • Announcements - announcement updated
  • Announcements - new announcement available
  1. On the minibar, click your name and selectNotifications.
  2. Select how often you want to receive notifications (either daily or weekly) from the Summary of Activity drop-down menu. 
  3. Check the Email box next to the instant notifications you want to receive. 
  4. Choose any customizations you want to add to your notifications. 
  5. Click Manage my course exclusions to exclude courses from your Notification settings. 
    • A box will appear. Click on the X to exclude a course or the undo circular arrow to restart notifications from a course.
    • Click Close when finished.
  6. Click Save.

Notifications in the Pulse App

The Brightspace Pulse app lets students receive notifications on their mobile devices. Receive an alert when a new announcement is posted or a grade is released.

Students must adjust their Brightspace Notification settings (from the app or from a browser) as well as their iOS or Android notification options.

Account Settings

In Account Settings, you can change time zones, how discussion boards are displayed and add an email signature.

  1. On the minibar, click your name and selectAccount Settings.
  2. Click on the Account Settings, Discussions and Email tabs to customize your options.
  3. Click Save and Close.

Pronouns

Students must add pronouns in their HUB Student Center and enable them in Brightspace before others can view the pronouns in UB Learns.

Note: Pronouns for instructors and staff are not yet available at UB.

  1. If you haven't already done so, add pronouns to your profile in MyUB.
  2. On the minibar in Brightspace, click your name and selectAccount Settings.
  3. Click the Account Settings tab.
  4. Check the box next to Allow others to see my pronouns.
  5. Click Save and Close.
