Accessing Using Remote Desktop

Learn how to launch Microsoft Remote Desktop Client to access the software in My Virtual Computing Lab.

Remote Desktop software comes with Windows 7 and Vista. It provides access to all accessory programs and help documentation. Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop Client to access the software in My Virtual Computing Lab. Save work to your UBfs Myfiles (S: drive) or any connected drive and print to any connected printer.

My Virtual Computing Lab is available for use by current UB students, as well as faculty and staff paid by UB. It is not available for use by retirees, alumni or employees paid by sources other than UB.


To run Remote Desktop, you need:

  • Operating System: Windows 7 or Vista 
  • On-campus: A secure connection using wired ResNet, an OpenPort or UB Secure Wi-Fi
  • Off-campus: Connect using the off-campus VPN client AnyConnect


If you are off campus, you must run Cisco AnyConnect software before you connect to My Virtual Computing Lab.


  1. Connect securely  to the Internet:
    • On-Campus: connect with UB Secure Wi-Fi, ResNet or OpenPort.
    • Off-Campus, install and run AnyConnect.
  2. Launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client.
  3. You will be asked, "Do you want to open or save this file?" Select Open.
  4. On the following window, select Allow.
  5. A window appears advising, "The publisher of this remote desktop connection cannot be identitfied." Click the Details arrow.
  6. The window expands to reveal options to use drives, printers and devices while in My Virtual Computing Lab. Be sure to check the box next to Drives if you want to save files to your UBfs Myfiles (S: drive) or your hard drive (C: drive) or a removable USB drive.
  7. Click Connect.
  8. A Windows Security window appears.
    • If your UBITName appears, enter your UBIT password in the Password field.
    • If you UBITName does not appear, select Other User and enter the following:
      • User name: ad\UBITName
      • Password: your password
  9. Click OK. You are now connected to My Virtual Computing Lab. Click Start > All Programs to view all programs, utilities and help files.
