Office Professional Plus 2016: Windows Download for Personally-Owned Computers

Use Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 for Windows, a productivity suite of software for editing documents, spreadsheets, computer slide shows, reading email and more.

Note: This software can be downloaded multiple times and does not limit the number of installations.

Before You Download: See If Your Computer Is 32 or 64-Bit

There are two different ways to see if your computer is 32-or 64-bit.

Method 1: View the System window in Control Panel

  1. Click Start, type system in the search box, and, under Control Panel, click System. If System isn’t listed under Control Panel in the search results, click Control Panel to see more results.
  2. Under System, look at the System type entry. It will say either 32-bit Operating System or 64-bit Operating System.

Method 2: View the System Information window

  1. Click Start, type system in the search box, and, under Programs, click System Information. If System Information isn’t listed under Programs in the search results, click Programs to see more results.
  2. In the right pane, look at the System Type entry. For a 32-bit version operating system, it will say X86-based PC. For a 64-bit version, you’ll see X64-based PC.

Work at Home Acknowledgment

This acceptance form is valid for the Microsoft software products you intend to download, which shall be referred to collectively herein as the “Software”. Software is made available to you because The State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) has purchased license coverage for the Software through its Microsoft Campus Subscription Enrollment effective October 1, 2010. UB is ordering the right for you to use the Software for Work-related purposes at home under its Microsoft Campus Subscription Enrollment. You are not licensed to use the Software at home for personal purposes. You do not own the license, rather you are authorized to use the Software pursuant to the terms and conditions of the licensing agreement. You will be required to remove the Software from your home machine immediately if UB decides to no longer participate, or earlier if your UB employment ends. Please note that non-knowledge workers such as maintenance, groundskeepers, cafeteria and mailroom, etc. are ineligible for Work at Home rights if they were not included in the Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) employee calculation for UB.

You will adhere to the following policies:

  • Read and abide by the license agreement(s) associated with this Software. Understand that Microsoft provides no technical support in association with your work-at-home use.
  • Understand the minimum specifications to run the Software are listed at Microsoft's Website.
  • Remove the Software from your home machine immediately upon the earlier of (a) expiration of the licensed period specified above or (b) the end of your employment with UB.
  • Understand that you are not licensed to use the Software for personal purposes.

Who Can and Cannot Download Office from UB

Download Office if you are a:

  • UB Student
  • Faculty paid by UB
  • Faculty Student Association employees
  • Geographic Full-time Faculty
  • UB State employee (UUP, CSEA, MC, PEF)
  • Sub-Board I (SBO) employee
  • Research Foundation employee
  • UB Foundation employee
  • Medical resident

You cannot download Office from UB if you are:

  • UB retiree
  • Employee on volunteer appointment with UB (paid by someone other than UB)
  • Alumni
  • Senior Auditor
  • Faculty, staff or student from SUNY school other than UB

System Requirements

  • Computer and processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster x86-bit or x64-bit processor with SSE2 instruction set
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM
  • Hard disk: 3.0 GB available disk space
  • Display: 1280 x 800  screen resolution
  • Graphics: Graphics hardware acceleration requires a DirectX 10 graphics card.
  • Operating system: Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 Service Pack 1, 10 Server, Server 2012 R2, Server 2012, or Server 2008 R2
    For the best experience, use the latest version of any operating system.
  • Browser: The current or immediately previous version of Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.
  • .NET version: .NET 3.5 required. Some features may require .NET 4.0 or 4.5 CLR to also be installed.
  • Other: Internet functionality requires an Internet connection. Fees may apply.
  • A touch-enabled device is required to use any multi-touch functionality. But, all features and functionality are always available by using a keyboard, mouse, or other standard or accessible input device. Note that touch features are optimized for use with Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
  • Certain advanced functionality may require connectivity to:
    • Microsoft Exchange Server 2016, Exchange Server 2013, Exchange Server 2010, or Exchange Online. Outlook 2016 does not support connections to Exchange Server 2007.
    • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013, SharePoint Server 2010, or SharePoint Online; and/or Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2013 or SharePoint Foundation 2010.
  • For integration with Skype for Business/Microsoft Lync (optional): Skype for Business Online, Lync 2013, Lync 2010, and Office Communicator 2007 R2. Office Communicator 2005 and Office Communicator 2007 are not supported.
  • OneDrive or OneDrive for Business
  • Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Skype for Business Online, and OneDrive for Business are available with qualifying Office 365 subscriptions.
  • Certain inking features require Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7.
  • Speech recognition functionality requires a close-talk microphone and audio output device.
  • Rights Management features require access to either a cloud deployment of Microsoft Rights Management (Azure Rights Management) or an on-premises deployment (Active Directory Rights Management Services).
  • Dynamic Calendars require server connectivity.

Common Questions

Why am I being prompted for a product or activation key?

You must uninstall all previous versions (trial versions and full versions) of Office before you download and install UB's version.

If you did, re-start your computer and launch the software again.

If you did, and still get prompted for a key, run the Office Easy Fix Removal Tool to remove any remnants of Office that may still be on your computer, then install UB's version. 

If I delete a previous version of Office, do my files get deleted?

No, deleting old versions of office does not delete or harm files you produced using Office.

May I download Office more than once?

Yes.

Can I use Office on a Mac?

Yes. You can download Office for Mac. Additionally, If you are using a Macintosh computer running Boot Camp or running Parallels or VMWare and your computer meets the requirements, you can run Office 2016 for Windows on your Mac.

Can I order a physical copy of Office media?

No.

How can I log into OneNote online after I install Office 2016?

Go to https://account.microsoft.com/about and create a free Microsoft account.

How can I use Word with languages other than English?
