Getting Started with Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade

See which version is the right download for your computer.  Make sure your software works with Windows 7.

Checking If Your Computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

You cannot upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows XP or Vista to a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

Before you download Windows 7, check your computer to see whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, so that you download the correct version:

 

Verifying Compatibility with Existing Software

Some programs have compatibility issues with Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Visit Microsoft's Windows Compatibility center to search by software name for compatibility with Windows 7 or Windows 8 before you download an upgrade.
