Compatibility with Prior Editions of Office

The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack gives older versions of Office the ability to open, edit, and save Office 2010 documents.

About Office 2010

We recommend that students stay consistent with the version of Office that their professors use. We do not recommend upgrading before the end of the semester.

Running Windows Update prior to installing software ensures that your computer is up-to-date.

You must meet eligibility requirements and agree to the terms of the license agreement to download Office.

Eligibility

This software is available to:

  • UB Students who have paid the Comprehensive fee
  • UB Faculty who are paid by UB
  • UB Faculty Student Association employees
  • UB Geographic Full-time Faculty
  • UB State employee (UUP, CSEA, MC, PEF)
  • UB Sub-Board I (SBO) employees
  • UB Research Foundation employees
  • UB Foundation employees
  • UB Medical residents

This software is NOT available to:

  • Retirees
  • UB students who have not paid the Comprehensive fee
  • Employees on volunteer appointments with UB (paid by someone other than UB)
  • Alumni
  • Faculty, staff or students from SUNY schools other than UB
  • Senior Auditors

System Requirements

If you are using a Macintosh computer running Boot Camp or running Parallels or VMWare and your computer meets the requirements, you can run Office 2010 on your  Mac.

Your computer must meet the system requirements:

  • Processor: 500 MHz or higher.
  • Memory: 256 MB or higher.
  • Hard Disk: 1.5 GB; a portion of the disk space will be freed after installation if the original download package is removed from the hard drive.
  • 64-Bit: Windows Vista or Windows 7

Downloading Microsoft Office 2010

You cannot purchase a copy of Office through UB.

Work at Home Acknowledgment

This acceptance form is valid for the Microsoft software products you intend to download, which shall be referred to collectively herein as the “Software”. Software is made available to you because The State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) has purchased license coverage for the Software through its Microsoft Campus Subscription Enrollment effective October 1, 2010. UB is ordering the right for you to use the Software for Work-related purposes at home under its Microsoft Campus Subscription Enrollment. You are not licensed to use the Software at home for personal purposes. You do not own the license, rather you are authorized to use the Software pursuant to the terms and conditions of the licensing agreement. You will be required to remove the Software from your home machine immediately if UB decides to no longer participate, or earlier if your UB employment ends. Please note that non-knowledge workers such as maintenance, groundskeepers, cafeteria and mailroom, etc. are ineligible for Work at Home rights if they were not included in the Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) employee calculation for UB.

You will adhere to the following policies:

  • Read and abide by the license agreement(s) associated with this Software. Understand that Microsoft provides no technical support in association with your work-at-home use.
  • Understand the minimum specifications to run the Software are listed at Microsoft's Website.
  • Remove the Software from your home machine immediately upon the earlier of (a) expiration of the licensed period specified above or (b) the end of your employment with UB.
  • Understand that you are not licensed to use the Software for personal purposes.

Prompted for a Product Key?

Remove or Uninstall Office 2010 Trial or versions of Office licensed with a key before you download and install Office 2010 fiom UB. Installing over a trial or demo version or a version with a key causes problems and prompts you for a product key.

 

If you are prompted for a product key, uninstall the trial or demo version or licensed key version completely, and then install Office from UB.

Turning On Automatic Updates

Turn on Automatic Updates after you install Office to help keep your system secure and up-to-date.

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
    • Click System.
    • Select the Automatic Updates tab.
    • Click Performance and Maintenance > System.
    • Click the Automatic Updates tab.
  3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.
