Do Not Install Over Trial or Demo Versions

Remove or Uninstall Office 2010 Trial before you download and install Office 2010. Installing over a trial or demo version causes problems and prompts you for a product key.

System Requirements

Your computer must meet the system requirements:

  • Processor: 500 MHz or higher.
  • Memory: 256 MB or higher.
  • Hard Disk: 1.5 GB; a portion of the disk space will be freed after installation if the original download package is removed from the hard drive.
  • See if your PC is running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows , then determine the version of Office you need:
    • 32-Bit: Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32-bit version recommended for most computers)
    • 64-Bit: Windows Vista or Windows 7

Office 2010 provides support for the 32-bit version of Office 2010 programs running on 64-bit operating systems by using WOW64, a compatibility environment provided by the operating system that allows a 32-bit application to run on a Windows 64-bit operating system. Using the 32-bit version of Office 2010 allows you to continue to use existing third-party add-ins for Office that are 32-bit.

The 64-bit version of Office 2010 is not compatible with any other 32-bit version of Office programs. As a result, you must first uninstall all 32-bit versions of Office programs before you install the 64-bit version of Office 2010.

Compatibility with Prior Editions of Office

The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack gives older versions of Office the ability to open, edit, and save Office 2010 documents.

Uninstall trial or demo versions of Office before you download and install Office 2010. Installing over a trial or demo version causes problems and prompts you for a product key.
