Mathematica for Linux for UB-Owned Computers

Use Mathematica: math software that integrates numeric and symbolic computations, graphics, programming language documentation and connectivity to other applications.

In order to install Mathematica, you need to first request the activation key from the vendor. The key will be emailed to your UB email address. You can then install the software.

Downloading Mathematica

Mathematica integrates a numeric and symbolic computational engine, graphics system, programming language, documentation system, and connectivity to other applications. Mathematica is available for installation on UB-owned computers for instructional use. This software is not licensed for federally sponsored research.

Installing Mathematica

  1. Go to the Wolfram Activation Key Request Form
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. Enter your complete buffalo.edu email address, first name and last name in the fields as requested.
  4. Create a password of at least 6 characters. Enter it in both the Password and Confirm password fields.
  5. Enter the captcha code that appears.
  6. Click Create Wolfram ID.
  7. In your UB email, reply to the confirmation email from Wolfram.
  8. Go to the Wolfram Activation Key Request Form and log in with your UB email address and Wolfram password.
  9. In the Activation Key Request form:
    • Enter your first name, last name and UB email address in their respective fields.
    • Select Mathematica for Sites (Single Machine) from the Select a Product dropdown.
    • Select Linux in the Platform dropdown.
  10. Click Submit. The activation key will be sent to your UB email address.
  11. Download the software by clicking the Download Mathematica from UB for UB-Owned Computers button, above.
  12. Mathematica 9 installation should be done with root privileges. If installing from a download file, change the directory to the downloaded file location. If you are in GUI mode, press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to change to text mode or run in Terminal.
  13. Enter sudo sh MathInstaller to start the installer.
  14. Press Enter to accept the default installation directory for Mathematica, or enter a new location and press Enter.
  15. After the files are copied to your hard drive, press Enter to accept the default location in which to copy the executable scripts, or type a new location and press Enter.
  16. When the installation is complete, exit Terminal mode or press Ctrl-Alt-F7.
  17. Go to usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/9.0/Executables.
  18. Double-click Mathematica.
  19. Click Run.
  20. The Wolfram Product Activation dialog appears. Enter your activation key, which was sent to your UB email account. Click Activate to activate online.
  21. You must accept the terms of the license agreement to activate the software. Select I accept the terms of this agreement and click OK.
