Mozilla Firefox and RTSP (RealPlayer)

Download Firefox, a web browser. Configure Firefox to allow it to open streaming media files with the RTSP protocol (RealPlayer).

Video and music files often use the RTSP protocol, using a URL prefaced with rtsp://.  Firefox does not know how to handle this protocol natively. This can result in the error RTSP is not a registered protocol when you try to access streaming media on the web.

To adjust the Firefox configuration settings to allow Firefox to open RTSP links:

  • Open Firefox, and type about:config in the URL bar.
  • Right-click in the main window and select New and then String.
  • Enter network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp for the preference name and click OK.
  • Enter /usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay and click OK.
