Downloading Mathematica for Linux (Students)

Mathematica is available for student home installations. This software is not licensed for federally sponsored research.

Installing Mathematica (Students)

In order to install Mathematica, you need to first request the activation key from the vendor. The key will be emailed to your UB email address. You can then install the software.

Get Activation Keys

  1. Go to the Enter your complete email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field. 
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. Enter your complete email address, first name and last name in the fields as requested.
  4. Create a password of at least 6 characters. Enter it in both the Password and Confirm password fields.
  5. Enter the captcha code that appears.
  6. Click Create Wolfram ID.
  7. In your UB email, reply to the confirmation email from Wolfram.
  8. Go to the Wolfram Activation Key Request Form
  9. Enter your complete email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field.
  10. Enter your Wolfram password you created in the Password field.
  11. Click Sign in.
  12. In My Products and Services, click View.
  13. Click Mathematica for Students for Sites.
  14. Click View Activation Keys.

Install and Activate Mathematica

  1. Download the software from UB.
  2. Mathematica 8 installation should be done with root privileges. If installing from a download file, change the directory to the downloaded file location. If you are in GUI mode, press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to change to text mode or run in Terminal.
  3. Enter sudo sh MathInstaller to start the installer.
  4. Press Enter to accept the default installation directory for Mathematica, or enter a new location and press Enter.
  5. After the files are copied to your hard drive, press Enter to accept the default location in which to copy the executable scripts, or type a new location and press Enter.
  6. When the installation is complete, exit Terminal mode or press Ctrl-Alt-F7.
  7. Go to usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/10/Executables or usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/11/Executables.
  8. Double-click Mathematica.
  9. Click Run.
  10. The Wolfram Product Activation dialog appears. Enter your activation key from the Wolfram website. Click Activate to activate online.
  11. You must accept the terms of the license agreement to activate the software. Select I accept the terms of this agreement and click OK.

Downloading Mathematica for Linux (Faculty/Staff Personal Use)

When downloading, you will need UB's site license number: L3321-2498.

Additional Information


  • Mathematica may be downloaded by UB students.
  • Faculty may downlload Mathematica from the vendor, Wolfram.
