Connecting on Campus using UB Secure with Windows XP

Configure your Windows XP computer for a secure connection to the UB network.

Connecting to Wi-Fi on Campus

UB Secure is the recommended access choice for connecting to UB's campus network. Your UBITName and password and all data transmitted from your device to the wireless access point (the campus network) are encrypted.

Create a Windows XP Profile for UB Secure:

It's tempting to click on UB_Secure in your found network list and then create a profile, but this has not been successful for most people.

  1. Select Start, then Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections, then double-click the Wireless Network icon. Click Properties. Select the Wireless Networks tab. Click Add.
  2. Select the Association tab. Enter UB_Secure in the Network name (SSID) field. In the Wireless network key section field select WPA2 for Network Authentication and AES for Data encryption.
  3. Select the Authentication tab. Select PEAP, leave unselected Authenticate as computer when computer information is available and Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable.
  4. Click Properties:
  5. Select Validate server certificate and select the authentication method Secured password. Leave Roaming identity and Domain blank if they are in your setup. In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities section, check Entrust certificates listed
    • Important: If you do not have the most current Operating System updates, our certificate vendor will not appear and your connection will fail. If this occurs, you can try unchecking Validate Certificate, however the method described in step 4.1 is the preferred method.
  6. Make sure Enable Fast Reconnect is not selected.
  7. Fast Reconnect improves performance when roaming between access points, but some machines do not authenticate properly when using PEAP with Fast Reconnect enabled. Following the method described in 4.2 is the preferred method
  8. Click Configure. Deselect Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Click OK.
  9. On the Connection tab, select Connect when this network is in range.
  10. Click OK to save the profile.
  11. Click OK. Click OK. Click Close.
  12. Right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon in your system tray in the lower right hand corner of your display and select Open Network Connection.
  13. The Wireless Network Connection window will open. Select UB_Secure, then click Connect.
  14. A login pop-up window will appear. In the User name and Password fields enter your UBITName and password in the User name and Password fields. In the Logon domain field enter UB_SECURE.
  15. When you are within range of wireless at UB you will automatically connect to UB_Secure.

Managing Your Windows XP Profile

If you change your UBITName or your UBIT password, you must delete and re-create your profile.

  1. Select Start, then Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections, then double-click the Wireless Network icon. Click Properties. Select the Wireless Networks tab.
  2. Select UB_Secure.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Click OK and completely exit the Wireless Network Properties windows.
  5. Repeat configuration steps 1-12 above.
