Using Your Mobile Device with UBmail Powered by Google

Set up a smartphone, such as an iPhone, Android or Windows Mobile phone, or a tablet, such as an iPad or Kindle Fire, to access UBmail Powered by Google.

To set up access to UBmail Powered by Google from your smartphone:

  • Configure your phone's built-in email client to use UB's IMAP and SMTP mail settings.
  • Use your phone's built-in email client to read email after you configure it for UBmail Powered by Google.

Configuring iOS Devices to Read UBMail Powered by Google

You can configure any iOS device, including iPhones and iPads, to read your UBMail Powered by Google email.

Settings

1. Enable Internet Message Access Protocal (IMAP) from UBmail
2. Tap Settings.

Enter your name, UBITName, password.

7. Enter the following:

  • Your first and last name in the Name field
  • Your UBITName@buffalo.edu email address in the Address field
  • Your UBIT password in the Password field
  • A name for the connection, such as UBMail, in the Description field

8. Scroll down. In Incoming Mail Server:

  • Enter imap.buffalo.edu for the Incoming Mail Server Host Name.
  • Enter your UBITName in the Username field.
  • Enter your UBIT password in the Password field.

9. Scroll down. In Outgoing Mail Server:

  • Enter smtp.buffalo.edu for Outgoing Mail Server SMTP.
  • Enter your UBITName in the Username field.
  • Enter your UBIT password in the Password field.

10. Tap Save.

11. Tap Settings. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Tap UBmail or whatever name you gave your UBmail connection.

14. Tap smtp.buffalo.edu as the primary server.

Important:

If you do not set up your outgoing (SMTP) settings properly with authentication as described below, you will not be able to send outgoing email from off campus.

15.Make sure Use SSL is set to on.

16. Verify that the Server Port is set to 465. If not, change it to 465.

17. Click Done.

Configuring Android Devices to Read UBMail Powered by Google

If you are experiencing problems connecting, try switching the smtp server to use TLS and port 25.

  1. Enable IMAP.
  2. Tap Applications.
  3. Select Email to open your device's default email client.
  4. Navigate to Accounts.
  5. Select Add account.
  6. Enter the following information:
    • Your UBITName@buffalo.edu for Email address.
    • Your UBITName password for Password.
  7. Select Manual setup.
  8. Enter the appropriate settings from the chart to configure your account.

Configuring Windows Phone 7+ to Read UBMail Powered by Google

  1. Enable IMAP.
  2. Select the right arrow.
  3. Select Settings and then select email + accounts.
  4. Select Add an account.
  5. Select Advanced Settings.
  6. In the Email field, enter your full email address, for example, jdoe@buffalo.edu.
  7. In the Password field, enter your UBIT password.
  8. Select Next.
  9. Select Internet mail. Enter the following:
    • Account name: UB Email
    • Your name: Type your name as you want it to appear when you send email messages from your phone.
    • Incoming e-mail server: imap.buffalo.edu.
    • Account type: POP or IMAP. We recommend IMAP so you can access your email from other devices. POP downloads your email to your device and erases it from the server.
    • User name: Enter your UBITName, not your email address.
    • Outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server: smtp.buffalo.edu.
    • Select the boxes Outgoing server requires authentication and Use the same user name and password for sending email.
    • Select Advanced Settings and select the boxes Require SSL for incoming mail and Require SSL for outgoing mail.
  10. Select Sign in.

Configuring Kindle Fire to Read UBmail Powered by Google

First, enable IMAP, then:

  1. Make sure your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Apps, Email, Start, Other.
  3. In the Email address field, enter your UBITName followed by @buffalo.edu (e.g., jdoe@buffalo.edu).
  4. In the Password field, enter your UBIT password.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. Tap IMAP.
  7. Enter the following:
    • In the Email field, enter your UBITName (Do NOT enter your @buffalo.edu email address, just your UBITName.)
    • In the Password field, enter your UBIT password.
    • In the IMAP server field, enter imap.buffalo.edu
    • For Secuirity type, select SSL (always)
    • For Authentication type, select PLAIN
    • For Port, select 993
    • Leave IMAP path prefix blank - it will say (Automatic using NAMESPACE if available)
  8. Tap Next
  9. Enter the following:
    • For SMTP server, enter smtp.buffalo.edu
    • For Security type, select SSL (always)
    • For Port, enter 465
    • Leave Require sign-in checked.
  10. Tap Next.
  11. Select how frequently you want messages checked: Every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes, hourly or manually.
  12. Tap Next.
  13. Enter your first and last name in the Type your name (displays on outgoing messages) field.
  14. Enter UB Email in the Give this account a name (optional) field.
  15. Tap View your INBOX.
