Renaming Your Personal Google Account

If you have a personal Google account named with your UBITName @buffalo.edu, you must rename it so it does not  conflict with your UB Gmail account.

Differentiating Between Your Personal Google Account and Your UB Gmail Account

A personal Google account is an account you have created at google.com using your @buffalo.edu email address. If Jane Doe, for example, has a UB email address jdoe@buffalo.edu, she might have had a Google account jdoe@buffalo.edu.

You may have a Google account that was created when someone shared a document with your @buffalo.edu address before you got UBmail Powered by Google.

Find Out if You Have a Non-UB Google Account

  1. Log out of your UBmail Powered by Google account, if you have one.
  2. Visit www.google.com/accounts.
  3. Log into your non-UB account with the @buffalo.edu address.
  4. Request your password. If you do not have an account there will be no password to recover.

Changing Your Personal Google Account

  1. Visit www.google.com/accounts.
  2. Log into your non-UB account with the @buffalo.edu address.
  3. Select Personal Settings and Change email.
  4. Select the kind of account you would like:
    • A new UB Gmail.com account.
    • An account that uses another address you already own, such as jdoe@yahoo.com.
  5. Select Continue. If you select Do this later, Google will change your account to another temporary name of their choice.

What Happens to All the Documents You Have Shared with Other People?

The owner of your files will be automatically re-named. Colleagues with whom you have shared files will see the new name.
