Configuring Your Mobile Device for UBmail (Central Email)

Volunteers: Learn how to set up the email app on your tablet or smartphone to work with UBmail (Central Email).

Instructions

iOS

Use your phone's built-in email client to read email after you configure it for UBmail (Central Email).

You can configure any iOS device, including iPhones and iPads, to read your UBmail Powered by Google email.

1. Tap Settings.

2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

3. Tap Add Account.

4. Tap Other.

5. Tap Add Mail Account.

6. Enter the following:

  • Your first and last name in the Name field
  • Your UBITName@buffalo.edu email address in the Address field
  • Your UBIT password in the Password field
  • A name for the connection, such as UBMail, in the Description field

7. Scroll down. If you can't scroll, click Next. In Incoming Mail Server:

  • Enter imap.buffalo.edu for the Incoming Mail Server Host Name.
  • Enter your UBITName in the Username field.
  • Enter your UBIT password in the Password field.

8. Scroll down. In Outgoing Mail Server:

  • Enter smtp.buffalo.edu for Outgoing Mail Server SMTP.
  • Enter your UBITName in the Username field.
  • Enter your UBIT password in the Password field.

9. Tap Save. If you don't have Save, click Next. Verifying will appear, then click Save.

10. Tap Settings. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Tap UBmail or whatever name you gave your UBmail connection.

13. Tap smtp.buffalo.edu as the primary server.

14. Verify that the Server Port is set to 465. If not, change it.

15. Click Done.

Android

Note: Different versions may display different options than those described here.  Instructions tested with Android 4.4.2 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8" Tablet.

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Tap Add account.
  4. Tap Personal (IMAP)
  5. Enter your UB email address (your UBITName followed by @buffalo.edu) and tap Next.
  6. Enter your UBITName password and tap Next.
  7. Set Required signin to ON.
  8. Change the default information to the following:
    • Username: your UBITName
    • Server: imap.buffalo.edu
    • Port: 993
    • Security Type: SSL/TLS (accept all certificates)
  9.  Tap Next.
  10. Change the default information to the following:
    • SMTP Server: smtp.buffalo.edu
    • Port: 465
    • Security Type: SSL/TLS (accept all certificates)
    • Username: Your UBITName (remove @buffalo.edu if it appears)
  11. Tap Next.
  12. Set Sync frequency to Every 15 minutes.
  13. Select Notify me when email arrives and Sync email from the account.
  14. Tap Next. You are all set.
  15. Enter your name in the Your Name field.
  16. Tap Next.

Kindle Fire

  1. Make sure your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Apps, Email, Start, Other.
  3. In the Email address field, enter your UBITName followed by @buffalo.edu (e.g., jdoe@buffalo.edu).
  4. In the Password field, enter your UBIT password.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. Tap IMAP.
  7. Enter the following:
    • In the Email field, enter your UBITName (Do NOT enter your @buffalo.edu email address, just your UBITName.)
    • In the Password field, enter your UBIT password.
    • In the IMAP server field, enter imap.buffalo.edu
    • For Secuirity type, select SSL (always)
    • For Authentication type, select PLAIN
    • For Port, select 993
    • Leave IMAP path prefix blank - it will say (Automatic using NAMESPACE if available)
  8. Tap Next
  9. Enter the following:
    • For SMTP server, enter smtp.buffalo.edu
    • For Security type, select SSL (always)
    • For Port, enter 465
    • Leave Require sign-in checked.
  10. Tap Next.
  11. Select how frequently you want messages checked: Every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes, hourly or manually.
  12. Tap Next.
  13. Enter your first and last name in the Type your name (displays on outgoing messages) field.
  14. Enter UB Email in the Give this account a name (optional) field.
  15. Tap View your INBOX.

General Settings

If you have a device not listed above, use these settings.

For Incoming Server, choose:

  • IMAP if you plan to read email on multiple devices, such as your laptop, phone and computers in cybraries
    or
  • POP if you plan to only read your email using this mobile device

server: imap.buffalo.edu

port: 993

client setting: SSL (Secure Sockets Layer protocol)

Incoming (POP)

server: pop.buffalo.edu

port: 995

client setting: SSL (Secure Sockets Layer protocol)

Outgoing (SMTP)

server: smtp.buffalo.edu

port: 465

client setting: SSL (Secure Sockets Layer protocol)

Directory (LDAP)

ldap.buffalo.edu

Search Base/Root: o=University at Buffalo, c=us

Accessing Through Your Web Browser Instead

If you don't want to set up an email app, use your device's Web browser and go to https://ubmail.buffalo.edu
