Deleting Email and Emptying the Trash for Central Email

Learn how to remove email messages from your inbox and trash folder.

You will not receive email if you have exceeded your UBmail quota (storage), so you should delete messages to stay under your quota. Empty your trash folder to permanently delete messages and stop them from counting toward your storage quota.

Delete Email Messages

Your method of deleting email messages depends on the way you access your email:

Web version of UBmail (Central Mail)

  1. Select the message you wish to delete from the list (Hold down Shift or Ctrl to select multiple messages).
  2. Click the Delete button.

Thunderbird Email Client

  1. Select the folder containing the email messages you want to delete.
  2. Select the email message(s) to be deleted from the message list. (Press and hold Shift or Ctrl to select multiple messages.)
  3. Press Delete. The selected message(s) will be moved to the Trash folder.

Microsoft Outlook 2007, 2010, 2011

  1. Select the email message you want to delete. (Press and hold Shift or Ctrl to select multiple messages.)
  2. Select Delete on the toolbar. The selected message will be moved from your Inbox to your Deleted Items folder.

Empty Your Trash Folder

The method of emptying your trash folder depends on the way you access your email:

Web version of UBmail

  1. Click Settings in the upper right hand corner of the interface.
  2. Select Folders.
  3. Select the Trash folder (or any folder you want to empty).
  4. Click the Folder Actions tab (gear icon) at the bottom of the screen.
  5. From the pop-up menu, click Empty.

Thunderbird Email Client

Select File > Empty Trash. All email messages in the Trash folder will be permanently deleted.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 for Windows

To manually remove messages from your Deleted Items folder:

  1. Select Mail in the Navigation Pane.
  2. Right-click Deleted Items folder. Select Empty “Deleted Items” Folder.
  3. Click Yes.

Microsoft Outlook 2010 for Windows

To manually remove messages from your Deleted Items folder:

  1. Press Ctrl-6 to select Folder List.
  2. Right-click Deleted Items folder. Select Empty Folder.
  3. Click Yes.

Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Macintosh

To manually remove messages from your Deleted Items folder:

  1. Select Contacts in the View switcher.
  2. Right-click Deleted Items folder. Select Empty folder.
  3. Click Yes.
