Thunderbird

Thunderbird is an open-source email client from Mozilla. Thunderbird has a quick message search system and customizable views.

Configuring Thunderbird for UB Central Email

If you do not already have Thunderbird, download Thunderbird.

  1. Launch Thunderbird. If this is your first time running Thunderbird, the Mail Account Setup window will open automatically. Skip to step 5.
  2. Select Edit > Account Settings.
  3. Click Account Actions.
  4. Select Add Mail Account from the drop-down menu.
  5. When the Mail Account Setup window appears:
    • Enter your name for Your name.
    • Enter your UBITName@buffalo.edu email address for Email address.
    • Enter your UBITName password for Password.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Click Manual Config.
  8. Select IMAP or POP3 from the Incoming drop-down menu. IMAP will save your messages on the server. POP3 will not, so if you use another comptuer to check your mail you won't be able to see your old messages.
    • If you selected IMAP:
      • Enter imap.buffalo.edu for Server hostname.
      • Select 993 from the Port drop-down menu.
      • Select SSL/TLS from the SSL drop-down menu.
      • Select Normal password from the Authentication drop-down menu.
    • If you selected POP3:
      • Enter pop.buffalo.edu for Server hostname.
      • Select 995 from the Port drop-down menu.
      • Select SSL/TLS from the SSL drop-down menu.
      • Select Normal password from the Authentication drop-down menu.
  9. Complete the information for Outgoing: SMTP:
    • Enter smtp.buffalo.edu for Server hostname.
    • Select 25 for the Port drop-down menu.
    • Select SSL for Client Setting.
  10. Enter your UBITName@buffalo.edu email address for Username.
  11. Click Re-test.
  12. If your account settings test was successful, click Create Account.
