Set Up UBmail Powered by Exchange for Phones and Tablets

Operating System: iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone

Applies To: UB faculty, staff, medical residents, retirees and administrative accounts

Configure your phone or tablet, including iPad, iPhone, and Android devices, to access UBmail Powered by Exchange.

Apple iOS 10.2+

1. From the home screen, tap Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data.  Verify that Push is turned on and that Fetch is set to Manually (this is the default)

2. Tap Mail to return to email settings

3. Tap Accounts > Add Account > Exchange

4. Enter:

  • Email: Your UBITName immediately followed by @buffalo.edu 
  • Password: Your UBITName Password  

5. Press Next

6. Enter:

  • Email: Your UBITName immediately followed by @buffalo.edu
  • Server Name: exchowa.buffalo.edu
  •  Domain: AD                                    
  • Username: Your UBITName                               
  • Password: Your UBIT Password
  • Description: My UB Email

7. Press Next

8. Review and set the information you want to Synchronize with your Exchange Mail Account and turn off any you do not want to sync. If you choose to synchronize an iPhone with your Exchange Contacts, and Calendar, all existing Contact and Calendar information on the iPhone will be OVERWRITTEN.  Additionally, iTunes will no longer sync contacts and calendars with your desktop computer. You can still sync your iPhone or iPod touch wirelessly with Apple’s iCloud service.

8. Press Save

By default, 50 Recent Messages will be shown on your iPhone

To synchronize more, go into Settings > Mail, select your Exchange account and press Show.  Syncing more than 50 Recent Messages can degrade your device's performance.

Apple iOS (up to 10.1)

1. Tap Settings from the Home screen, then Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then Fetch New Data and ensure that Push is set to On and Fetch is set to Manually.

2. Go to Settings > Mail > Contacts > Calendars > Add Account > Exchange.

3. Enter:

  • Your UBITName immediately followed by @buffalo.edu in the email field
  • Your UBIT password in the Password field

4. Press Next.

5. Enter:

  • Email: Your UBITName immediately followed by @buffalo.edu
  • Server Name: exchowa.buffalo.edu
  •  Domain: AD                                    
  • Username: Your UBITName                               
  • Password: Your UBIT Password
  • Description: UB Exchange

6. Tap Next.

7. If you want to activate your Exchange Contacts set the button to ON.

8. If you turn your Exchange Contacts ON, choose Keep on My iPhone – to keep your existing local contacts.

9. Review and set the information you want to Synchronize with your Exchange Mail Account and turn off any you do not want to sync.

10. Press Save.

Android

Set Up Your Android to Use the Gmail App

  1. Tap the Gmail app.
  2. Tap Add another email address.
  3. Tap Exchange, then tap Next.
  4. Enter your UBITName immediately followed by @buffalo.edu and tap Manual setup.
  5. Tap Exchange and tap Next.
  6. Enter your UBIT password and tap Next.
  7. Make the following changes:
    • Edit the Username field to be ad\ immediately followed by your UBITName.
    • Edit the Server field to be exchowa.buffalo.edu
    • Edit SecurityType to be SSL/TLS (Accept all certificates)
  8. Tap Next.
  9. Tap OK in the warning box.
  10. Tap Next.
  11. Tap Activate.

Windows Mobile 6.1

  1. Select Start > Programs > ActiveSync.
  2. Select Add Server Source.
  3. Enter exchowa.buffalo.edu for Server Address.
  4. Select This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter your your UBITName, UBIT password, ad for domain, and select Save password (required for automatic sync).
  7. Click Advanced and select If there is a conflict replace item on my device.
  8. Set Event logging to None. Click Next.
  9. Edit Server Settings > Choose the data you want to synchronize. Select Contacts, Calendar, E-mail and Tasks.
    • For Windows Mobile 6 Professional:
      1. Select Calendar.
      2. Click Settings > Synchronize only the past: (your choice) of appointments and all future appointments. Enter number of months (Recommended 1 to 3 months.)
      3. Click OK.
      4. Click Finish.
    • For Windows Mobile 6 Standard:
      1. Select Calendar.
      2. Click Menu-Setting > Select Calendar. Click Settings > Synchronize only the past: (your choice) of appointments and all future appointments. Enter 1 to 3 months.
      3. Click Done.
      4. Click Finish.
  • Your device will synchronize with the Exchange server. This may take about 5 minutes and is dependent on the amount of data and dates involved.
  • After your device has synchronized select Menu > Schedule. From here you can view the Sync Options. We recommend that you select the option Send outgoing items immediately.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry models starting with Q10, including Z10 and Z30, are all capable of active sync functionality when configured following these steps.  

  1. Tap Settings > Accounts > Add Accounts.
  2. Tap Advanced (at the bottom of the screen).
  3. Tap Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
    • Description: UBmail Powered by Exchange
    • Domain: AD
    • Username: your UBITName.
    • Email Address: your UBITName immediately followed by @buffalo.edu.
    • Password: your UBIT Password.
    • Server Address: exchowa.buffalo.edu.
    • Port: 993.
    • Set Use SSL On.
    • Set Use VPN Off.
    • Set Push On.
  4. Tap Next.
  5. Tap Done.
