UB Central Email Web Interface Upgraded on 7/16

On July 16, 2013, UB's Central Email Web interface was upgraded. Find out if you're affected, and how to get the most out of your new email system.

Who Is NOT Affected?

This change does NOT affect UBmail Powered by Google (used by most students), faculty and staff using UB Central Exchange email, or anybody sending and receiving their email with an email client (like Outlook) or smartphone.

Why was this change made?

The benefits of the Web interface upgrade for the UB community include:

  • New, improved features (see below for a list)
  • Improved interface stability and security
  • More consistency across modern Web browsers

Who uses UBmail (Central Email)?

Faculty, staff and students in the following schools:

  • Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Dental Medicine
  • Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

Also, faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering who have not been migrated to central Exchange email services.

What will I need to do after July 16, 2013?

While all of your messages and email folders will remain intact after the upgrade, there are two things that may require your attention:

Import Your Address Book

Please import your contacts from the previous system by December 17, 2013. After that date, you will no longer be able to access your old contacts.

The first time you log into the upgraded Central Email Web interface at, you will have the option to import your contacts when you next log in:

  1. Go to and log in
  2. Select Settings > Preferences > Address Book > Import Atmail Contacts > Import contacts from Atmail on next login
  3. Tick the checkbox
  4. Click Save
  5. Log out of UBmail
  6. Log back in. Your contacts will be imported.

Reset Your Signature File

If you had a custom signature file you will need to reset it:

  • After the upgrade, go to and log in
  • Select Settings > Identities > Email Address > Signature
  • Compose your new signature file
  • Click Save

What new features does the Web interface have?

  • Cleaner look, with a choice between two skins, "Larry" and "Classic"
  • Ability to set up autosaving and drafts
  • Message threads
  • Ability to place replies in the same folder as the message being replied to
