Adobe, publishers of popular software titles such as Adobe
Professional, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Dreamweaver, has
significantly changed their software licensing model to make it
economically prohibitive to continue providing these titles through
My Virtual Computing Lab. SUNY and UB have attempted to
negotiate sustainable licensing terms with Adobe that would provide
for continued use of these titles in UB’s labs for more than
a year without success.
Adobe’s previous license model was based on
“perpetual” licenses, i.e. licenses purchased and owned
by the University. Adobe has moved to a cloud subscription service
model for software as a service that you pay for annually. You have
access as long as you continue to pay. Most new releases of
Adobe software will be available only through cloud subscription
("Adobe Creative Cloud"). Cloud subscription is not available for
Because of these license model changes, Adobe products were
removed from My Virtual Computing Lab on January 21, 2014.
Adobe products will continue to be available in Public IT
Service Sites across campus, until maintenance contracts for the
CIT is investigating reasonably priced or open source software
titles that provide similar, perhaps identical, functionality to
replace these Adobe titles in the standard software image.
