Faculty/staff: Problems redirecting UBmail to alternate accounts

Redirecting email from your UBmail powered by Exchange to a Gmail or other account? Certain messages can get lost in transit, without any indication you received anything at all.

Emails delivered to your third-party email account using Outlook's redirect feature are affected. Redirecting email is not the same as forwarding; emails that are forwarded from your UBmail account to a third-party email are not affected.

The disappearing emails are the result of certain security settings on the part of the sender, and of the third-party email provider, like Google.

For example, if a sender “signs” their email with a common security protocol called DKIM, and that email is redirected upon receipt to a different account, the digital signature will indicate the email did not come from an approved email server at the sender's email service provider.

Every service provider handles email like this differently. Gmail, for example, does not accept the mail or return it to your UBmail account, meaning email redirected in this way can disappear, irretrievably, without a notification or warning.

What can I do?

You may want to avoid using the redirect feature in UBmail Powered by Exchange altogether, as every email provider handles these messages differently. Email forwarding rules can be used instead.

If you wish to continue redirecting email from your UBmail account, contact your departmental IT support to arrange a workaround.
