On Wednesday April 13, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, please join the University at Buffalo for the annual Women in STEM cooperative summit. This summit is open all who are interested acknowledging and honoring the many accomplishments of women in STEM in engineering, technology, science and mathematics.
The mission of this summit is to bridge the STEM gender gap through both cultural inclusion and educational opportunities. Women in STEM want to reach out to students to increase awareness of the lack of women in the STEM academies and to encourage greater participation in these departments. The summit will offer an overall supportive community to women students, faculty and professionals in the STEM academies from the University at Buffalo and Western New York.
Kathleen Murphy, Service Manager for Network and Classroom Services, part of UB Information Technology, told UBIT News, “Women in STEM fields are underrepresented, underpaid, and often underappreciated. The summit is an opportunity to acknowledge women’s contributions to STEM and develop our potential. I am looking forward to spending a day with over 200 of the area’s brightest and most talented women in STEM as we inspire, grow and connect together.”
This year, the summit will have an information fair offering participants resources in STEM to utilize. Also new for 2016, the summit will hold student poster presentations.
Gilda Barabino, PhD, Berg Professor and Dean of the Grove School of Engineering at the City College of New York will present the keynote address on Identity and Career Progression for Women in STEM before the concurrent sessions. The topics include personal strategies for working smarter not harder, and redefining success inside the workplace.
