You’re pretty good with computers, right? But if your laptop wouldn’t boot up, what would you do?

“If a friend offers to work on your computer and breaks something, you have to pay for that. If a VITEC technician damages something, it’s repaired at no cost. ”

You may think trying your hand at home repair is the way to go, but when you’re dealing with a busted phone, corrupt hard drive, cracked LCD screen or failing motherboard, you might do more harm than good. VITEC Solutions is on campus to solve these problems and more.

Close to Home

Located in the Lockwood 2nd floor Cybrary, VITEC Solutions is a local company who has promised "professional, convenient, reasonably-priced and prompt" repairs since 1982. They service both personally-owned and UB-owned devices, including iPads and iPhones.

To take advantage of VITEC’s services, simply drop your device off at the repair depot in Lockwood 2nd floor Cybrary. If your repair is covered by warranty, VITEC charges a facilitation fee; all non-warranty hardware repairs are subject to a non-refundable diagnostic fee. According to the VITEC website, estimates will be provided within 24 hours of drop off and repairs will be completed within 2-3 business days of estimate acceptance.

Devices are picked up several times a day from Lockwood Cybrary and taken to VITEC’s corporate offices at 455 Commerce Drive in Amherst for diagnostics and repairs. Drop-offs are also accepted at that location, only seven minutes from campus.

Need a new hard drive or any repair affecting your hard drive? It’s important to keep in mind that your old software will have to be reinstalled. If you know enough about computers to install your own software, then do it yourself and save a few bucks: otherwise, VITEC can reinstall your old software for an additional charge. (Don’t forget to also get your FREE software from UB, of course.)

It’s also always a good idea to back up your data, if possible, before a major repair.

But I Know A Guy…

Most of UB’s students have lived with digital devices most of their lives, and there’s no shortage of tech-savvy students on campus. So why should you pay a VITEC professional?

Adrianne M. Brautlacht, Director of Support Services for VITEC Solutions, can think of a few reasons.

"A tech savvy person versus a certified technician with years of experience working full time have vastly different skill sets," Adrianne said. "Plus, if a friend offers to work on your computer and breaks something, you have to pay for that. If a VITEC technician damages something, it’s repaired at no cost."

Peace of Mind

VITEC Solutions offers a 150 day parts and labor warranty on all hardware repairs that are out of manufacturer warranty during the time of repair. According to Adrianne, they are also an “Authorized Service Provider for most major manufacturers,” meaning any repairs VITEC makes are unlikely to void your original warranty.

VITEC Solutions is licensed to handle devices by Apple, HP, Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, Epson, Gateway, Canon, Toshiba, Okidata and IBM. If your device isn’t by one of these manufacturers, feel free to stop by the Lockwood 2nd Floor Cybrary and ask if they can help you.
