Reaching Students through Social Media

In the 2012 UB Student IT Experience Survey, a number of students commented that they weren’t aware of many useful UBIT services, but wished they were better informed. In September 2012, a UBIT campaign was launched, reaching students in a way most use every day: social media.

UBIT posts began circulating in September 2012, beginning with the Student Experience Facebook page, potentially reaching over 9,000 students. Each post includes a teaser headline, brief information about the service, and an eye-catching image- usually photos of students relating to technology or clever memes.

Most popular posts of the fall semester included a look at iprint, UB Secure, keeping UBmail post-graduation, and a finals week post listing 24 hour places with Wi-Fi on campus for studying. These posts resulted in subsequent traffic spikes to the UBIT website.

During the Spring 2013 semester, UBIT posts will continue to be featured on the Student Experience Facebook page, with additional messages appearing on the individual “Class Of” student Facebook pages, and the main University at Buffalo Facebook page.
