Phone Based Phishing Scam 2-9-2014

IT Security Alert

There are reports of people being cold-called by someone claiming to be from UB. This person states that your computer is compromised and you need to follow their instructions to fix it. They are seeking to gain control of your computer and/or UBIT account.

Voice Call Scam

Phishing email

There have been reports of cold calls being made to people affiliated with UB. The caller claims to be from "the computer department at UB", informs you that your computer is compromised and asks that you turn on your computer and perform some tasks. These tasks are intended to help them break into your computer as well as steal your credentials.

  • The caller ID shown for the number is not a UB number
  • UB will never ask for your password
  • The call may be made to your personal (home/cell) phone number

I already followed their instructions. What should I do?

  1. Immediately change your UBIT password, and any other passwords on accounts you access from the device you used when following their instructions.
  2. Consider the device to be compromised and have your IT support examine it (for UB owned/supported equipment) or if it is a personal device, take it to have it professionally serviced.
