A Practical Problem Solver

“I hate when problems come back; you need to get to the root cause.”

IT Policy and Communication

Laura works for UB’s IT Policy and Communication unit within CIT. Laura helped create the CIO-Appraisal application in use throughout CIT that simplifies the annual employee review process. She also maintains Clarity, the project management software that helps CIT determine how long a project will take, and how many people will be required to complete it.

Similar to all IT Policy and Communication team members, Laura handles UBIT Alerts and comments on a rotating basis, contributes as a team member on projects and creates webpages, documents and training materials.

“In addition to ongoing application maintenance, I work with staff from the different CIT departments, sometimes including the software vendor,” Laura stated. “I’ve found that careful coordination, thoroughly communicating the next steps, and keeping a record is most beneficial to all involved. I hate when problems come back; you need to get to the root cause.”

While a student at Buffalo State College, Laura worked part-time at the school’s library, creating a computer-based card catalog system for their Archives and Special Collections.

After college, Laura took a job with a consulting firm. The firm’s clients included several UB departments, including Animal Facilities and Health Services. When she saw a job opening at UB, she jumped on it. “I’ve always been attracted to the academic setting,” Laura said. “I like working with students; they always have a new perspective and know what devices and technologies are most used. This knowledge makes our student assistants important contributors to our work environment.”

Laura enjoys being part of a team and being a catalyst. “I enjoy working with different people from various disciplines, utilizing everyone’s different skills and resolving a problem,” Laura added. “I truly believe two heads are better than one.”

Away from UB, Laura is often on the go. “I have a two-year-old grandson who always keeps me busy,” she said. “I enjoy walking, especially with my dog, cooking, and painting.”
