Configuring SNMP Services for Windows

Learn how to configure SNMP services for Windows.

  1. Go to Start > Help and Support
  2. Enter install the SNMP service in the Search box
  3. Follow the instructions to install the SNMP service
  4. Configure preferences.
    1. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > SNMP Service
    2. Select the Agent tab
      • Enter a value from the Monitored Devices list System Contacts section. e.g. oss-unix for Set Contact
      • Enter the room and building where the device is located e.g. 244 Computing Center for Set Location
    3. Select the Security tab
      • Enter 128.205.250.11, 128.205.250.12, 128.205.250.13., 128.205.250.14 (these are the IPs of NCS's Network Monitoring Service (NMS) servers) for Accept SNMP Packets from these Hosts.
      • By default, Windows configures the community name public with READ ONLY rights. Leave public as your only community name. Since you just restricted SNMP queries to the NCS NMS servers, security will be sufficient.
  5. If the monitored device is running a firewall (as it should!), permit SNMP monitoring through the firewall
    1. Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.
    2. Select the Exceptions tab
    3. Select Add Program...
    4. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\snmp.exe, clicik Open.
    5. Click OK. Click OK.
  6. Verify your SNMP configuration is correct by querying it with the UB SNMP Check Utility
