Signed certificates are commonly used in web applications to verify the name of the server being contacted.

UB offers two vendors, Comodo and Versign, from which departments can purchase or renew signed certificates for buffalo.edu and its subdomains. Unless specified by a unit, UB will purchase certificates from Comodo.

General Notes about Certificate Signing Requests

  • Even if you're renewing a non-IIS server you may have to generate a new cert signing request. Send email to support staff to ask about specific details.
  • If given a choice you should generate a 2,048 bit (or larger) public key.
  • IIS version 5 or newer users:

Comodo Certificates

Comodo signing services pricing varies by type and duration. (All prices are subject to change.) The legacy certificates are signed with an older root and are normally not needed unless older mobile devices (e.g. Windows Mobile 5) are clients and those clients are unable to install the current Comodo root.

 
 
Verisign Certificates

VeriSign SSL Certificates and Website Security Solutions are now from Symantec.
