Protection, Promotion, and Pixie Dust: An Interview with the UBIT Fairy

"The thing I enjoy most is helping people—no doubt about it!"
UBIT Fairy, Resident IT Fairy

Where did you start your professional career?

I actually started my professional career here at UB, while completing my undergrad studies in Digital Fairy Studies. I interviewed for a position as Resident IT Fairy with UBIT, and they hired me on the spot!

What are your current duties as Resident IT Fairy?

I’m probably best known for my role in promoting IT services and teaching students about IT issues across campus. I tend to pop up when students are having trouble with technology problems, or when I sense that their information is in danger. What most people don’t know is that I’m also responsible for maintaining a magical fairy field around UB’s campuses. It protects students, faculty and staff from the dangers of phishing and other malicious digital practices.

What aspects of your personality do you bring to your work?

A positive personality is very important to my role with UBIT! I like to think that I bring enthusiasm, optimism, and sense of humor to the entire campus community.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

The thing I enjoy most is helping people—no doubt about it! Besides for that, I love flying around campus. The view from the sky is beautiful, especially in fall! Did you see that Beauty of UB video? I took all that aerial footage while flying over campus with a GoPro strapped to my head.

What does your wand do?

I’m afraid that’s a trade secret.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

I’m planning on going to graduate school and working towards a Ph.D. in Tooth Fairy Sciences. It’s cushy work if you can get it! Plus I think there’s a lot of opportunity to utilize technology in that field, you know? Really bring the whole tooth fairy thing into the 21st century. And I’m just the one to do it!
