General Education Course Design

CEI staff provides support for course design, course redesign and pedagogical innovation, as well as for the articulation of learning outcomes and development of student assessments for UB's revised General Education program.

As faculty work to create courses that meet the needs of the revised General Education program, CEI can offer the following services and support:

Online Resources

Syllabus Design/Redesign

Instruction in the Use of Blackboard Tools (UBlearns)

Development of Learning Outcomes

Mapping of Learning Outcomes to UB General Education, SUNY GER, AACU/LEAP and MSCHE Outcomes

Design of Instructional Activities and Materials

Development of Methods to Assess Student Achievement of Outcomes

Workshops (Scheduled and On-Demand)

In addition to online resources, CEI will be offering a series of three workshops every month from March through September 2015, each geared toward different levels of need.

Course Alignment and Redesign

This workshop is designed for the faculty member interested in reviewing an existing course for alignment to the new general education where a minimal level of revision and redesign is expected. The emphasis will be on syllabus revision.

Designing a New Course? Introduction and Overview

Participants will be led through the process of “backward design” to determine the outcomes students will achieve by taking the class and then outline the course syllabus to demonstrate how the course will help students achieve these outcomes and how the faculty will assess student achievement.

Course Design Boot Camp

In this intensive working session, faculty will design the most detailed aspects of a proposed course, including the refinement of learning outcomes, mapping course outcomes to program outcomes, designing instructional activities and student assessments, and writing the course syllabus in compliance with Faculty Senate requirements.
