Open Pedagogy

Open Pedagogy is an approach to teaching that allows students to contribute to the knowledge commons, not just consume from it, in meaningful and lasting ways.

What is open pedagogy?

While open educational practices are the practices that support OER, open pedagogy is the focus on how to improve the use of OER in the classroom.

Why should I use open pedagogy?

Open educational resources (OER) refer to the creation and use of materials in the classroom, and the subsequent sharing of these materials with other classrooms. This represents two important changes in classrooms. A change in:

  • Who produces educational materials, and who pays for it.
  • Pedagogy with the creation of materials by students in order to learn content.

Guiding this creation are Open Educational Practices (OEPs). These are “defined as practices which support the (re)use and production of OER through institutional policies, promote innovative pedagogical models, and respect and empower learners as co-producers on their lifelong learning path.” (Ehlers, 2011). OEPs serve to guide and promote the creation and sharing of OERs.

The initial phase of the OER movement successfully promoted the idea that knowledge is a public good. Subsequently, the conversation has now shifted to the need for innovative forms of support to create and evaluate OER. Extending beyond the use of open and modifiable instructional content, those engaged in OEPs are exploring how OER can be used to improve learning experiences and innovate education. Open pedagogy moves on to the development of concepts of how OER can be used to transform learning through:

  • The construction of knowledge assets.
  • Sharing with others and receiving feedback.
  • Determining what educational supports and structures need to be in place for this to occur.
