UB2020 IT Strategic Transformation Projects Updates

Voice Over Internet Protocol

Now into the 2nd year of the VoIP project, the Rolling Project Totals include 23 PBX/Key systems retired and 2,595 VoIP phone sets working on the system. Planning for the Unity infrastructure upgrade is underway with Cisco’s support while implementation and test plans are being developed by the project team. Unity is the system which provides unified voice and email messaging for the VoIP project. Also, the E911 team reviewed its implementation plan with IPLogic, the VoIP project’s outsource vendor, and is moving forward.

Shared IT Service Desk

The Shared IT Service Desk team’s report is final and recommends how to seamlessly integrate IT resources, and provides a set of best practices, processes and toolsets. The report outlines how the recommended solutions will enable collaboration between service providers and customer service points across the institution, how they will improve communications within University IT, and how they are a means of improving the customer experience.

The principles developed by the team are to improve service delivery by improving communications between IT units, to resolve problems on initial contact if possible, to accurately set expectations, to display a perceived seamless IT service, and to help customers manage interactions.

The report, included for UB employee observation only, details the team’s significant goals, the vision, and the system objectives. It also describes general product information and responsibilities. | See report.

Server and Services Consolidation

Unix E-mail
Work has begun to gather the technical details and processes with the Science and Engineering Node Services (SENS) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) for migration. Completion of the SENS migration is targeted for later this semester.

Unix Calendaring
The team is currently working at the College of Arts & Sciences to fine-tune the upcoming migration process.

Patch Management WSUS Implementation
WSUS has been successfully piloted at the College of Arts & Sciences and University Support Services, Client Technologies. .

File Services
The File Services team is working with the School of Architecture in developing a migration process, as well as defining what’s involved with retention and archiving. Also, planning for migrations in University Facilities has been initiated.

Database Services
Provision MS SQL migration work has begun in the Office of the Provost and in Administrative Computing Services.

Exchange E-mail
The total number of Exchange 2007 mailboxes is now at 970, up several hundred from this past mid-summer. Since the last ITST project newsletter, UB Business, University Facilities, and the Office of the Provost have all been successfully converted.

Citrix
A joint project between University Support Services Client Technologies and the Development Node has resulted in migration to a consolidated Citrix service. A pilot consolidation will be occurring at Facilities and Development.

Workstation Standardization

Team discussions continue on best practices for imaging and keeping standards set at an optimum. The palette of workstation offerings continues to be examined and expanded.

Plan to attend the November 21st UB2020 Information Technology Transformation Town Hall. There, you will have the opportunity to hear project leaders provide project updates. The Town Hall is being held on Friday November 21st at 8:30am in 120 Clemens Hall.
