A new Downtown Campus will be a center for teaching, research
and clinical care in Buffalo’s emerging biosciences
economy.
UB’s increased presence on the Buffalo Niagara Medical
Campus will complete the connections from clinical setting, to
classroom, to laboratory, to practical application of beneficial
treatments and devices that will grow our regional biomedical
economy.
Initially, the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and
later the dental medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health
schools will migrate to the Downtown Campus, supported by a full
range of housing, dining, recreation, and wellness services, as
well as facilities for research, development, and commercialization
of biomedical knowledge.
The plan aims to create a lively, urban, mixed-use district,
well-connected to the Allentown and Fruit Belt neighborhoods and
downtown Buffalo. A new linear park along Ellicott Street and a new
public space along a realigned Virginia Street will give the
district green space and a strong identity.
Implementation of the plan will be flexible, depending on where
UB can acquire property. Our collaboration with Kaleida Health on a
building to l house our Clinical and Translational Research Center,
as well as Kaleida’s Global Heart and Vascular Institute,
demonstrates the potential to fully integrate UB’s activities
with those of our partners.
