A study led by Professor Javier Blanco, Clin. Biochem., PhD, was recently published in Scientific Reports.
The article, titled "Contribution of DNA methylation to the expression of FCGRT in human liver and myocardium," shows that DNA methylation, an important epigenetic determinant of gene expression, impacts the expression of FcRn in human liver and myocardium (heart). This study provides a foundation to further define the contribution of epigenetic factors during the control of FcRn expression and the traffic of IgG & therapeutic mAbs in humans. The receptor FcRn mediates the cellular traffic of immunoglobulin G (IgG), albumin, and a variety of clinically relevant monoclonal antibody drugs (mAbs).
The publication was authored by postdoctoral associate Romina B. Cejas, PhD candidate Daniel F. Ferguson, former postdoctoral associate Adolfo Quiñones-Lombraña, and Javier Blanco from the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and by senior bioinformatics analyst Jonathan Bard, New York Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.
