Metrology and Testing
Dr. Alex Kitt
Alex received his PhD in Physics from Boston University where he worked in the BU Photonic Center specializing in optical characterization and control. He then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics where he studied novel optical surfaces.
Alex will be presenting on optical surface metrology and demonstrate the ability to use light as a precise measurement tool in manufacturing. He will also talk about our capabilities in utilizing CT for manufacturing.
Dr. Frank Medina and Dr. Ron Aman
Prior to joining BMW, Frank was a senior material specialist with Arcam AB at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, where he managed Arcam’s relationship and R&D activities in North America. His responsibilities included developing, validating and industrializing process themes for new materials, as well as teaching advanced EBM application support. Frank’s collaboration with scientists and engineers led to the development of new manufacturing techniques as well as the design and development of medical products used in spine surgery. He is published extensively in journal and conference periodicals and has received numerous honors. Frank has taught engineering AM courses and design for medical modeling at universities and currently teaches AM training courses across the country. He holds eight patents and for patent pending.
Ron has more than 12 years of additive manufacturing experience primarily researching direct metal additive manufacturing processes. Ron has 12 years of research experience in Electron Beam Melting (EBM) Arcam systems, 2 years of Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) experience on EOS M280, and 12+ years of experience on polymer based additive manufacturing including SLA, polyjet, DLP, material extrusion and binder jetting. Ron’s current research focus is process planning, material and process development of large scale metal additive manufacturing systems.
Frank will discuss material process development for metal AM and powder spheretization and characterization as it relates to metal 3D printing. Ron will discuss large scale additive manufacturing focusing on DED.
Dr. Ron Brown
Throughout his 40-year career in systems engineering, product engineering, and research and development, Ron has played a significant role in a variety of successful industry initiatives. As a BMW Technology Leader, Ron focuses on delivering effective and innovative solutions for his clients’ manufacturing challenges. His deep understanding of manufacturing technologies is based on his involvement and leadership in the engineering and integration of assembly and manufacturing automated systems for American automobile and consumer product manufactures.
Ron will present on advanced automation for manufacturing.
Buffalo Manufacturing Works Operations Manager Nadine Powell will give a general overview of the facility and lead a tour of the hi-bay for the UB team members.
Refreshments, hors d’oeuvres and conversation with BMW engineers.
