What does sustainability mean to you?

There are so many varieties of definitions that can be applied to sustainability; but to me sustainability means living your daily life with considerations of the environment and use of resources.  To expand upon that, sustainability is to make sure that the resources we value are conserved so future generations will also be able to use them.  Sustainability is the process of making sure that your daily actions do not have a negative effect on the environment and society.

What are you doing to help UB become more sustainable?

Currently, I am working with some of my fellow students along with dedicated faculty and staff members to create a permaculture campus garden on the North Campus.  Our goal is to have sustainable permaculture campus garden where student, faculty, and staff can interact.  The produce grown in the garden will most likely be used in the dining halls on campus.  Also, I take advantage of all of the recycling bins on campus.  It makes it very easy and convenient to recycle.

How do you involve UB’s faculty or staff in your sustainability work?

Through working with the campus garden, I have met supportive faculty and staff who are willing to help students increase sustainability on campus.  We have invited faculty who will have a vested in the garden.

How has sustainability impacted your academic pursuits?

Before I got involved with the campus garden, I was not exactly sure what I wanted to do with a Business Administration degree.  Now I know that I want to work for a company or organization that has a passion for sustainability and the environment.  To pursue my interest, this fall semester I will be taking Intro to Environmental Studies and Ecology.

What is the one thing you would like people to know that you do in your personal life to further sustainability?

This upcoming academic year, I will be a resident advisor.  I plan to use my knowledge about sustainability and my experiences with it to create programs and bulletin boards to inform my residents about sustainability and everything that UB is doing.

How could UB improve its sustainability efforts?

Having a larger presence at the freshmen orientations during the summer would be a great way that UB could improve its sustainability efforts.  Informing new students about UB’s sustainability efforts is important because UB needs to get students excited about sustainability.  Excited students will bring new ideas and want to get more involved in the efforts that UB is making.
