UB Recreation Services offers a variety of personal training and group physical activity classes.

Whether you were a varsity athlete in high school, or you just want to go have fun with your friends, you’ll find opportunities to play sports throughout the year. 

Intramural Sports

The Recreation and Intramural Department at UB offers a wide variety of safe and structured sports leagues for students, faculty and staff.

Bicycling

Biking is a fun, easy and convenient way to get around campus. You’ll enjoy free winter bike storage, free bike registration, and bike racks on UB Stampede buses. If you don’t have your own bike, you can take advantage of our campus-wide bikeshare program.

Outdoor Pursuits

Have fun and challenge yourself as you enjoy the natural beauty of UB’s campus and beyond. UB’s abundant green spaces include Lake LaSalle, Bizer Creek and Letchworth Woods — a living forest that is recognized by the National Wildlife Federation.

Boating on Lake LaSalle

Get some exercise, or just relax on the water. You can go boating on scenic Lake LaSalle whether you’re a student, faculty, staff or member of the outside community.

Free Loaner Watercraft

If you’re a UB student, faculty or staff, you can use your current UB Card to get free loaner kayaks, canoes, paddle boats and paddle boards from the Lake LaSalle boat dock, located between the UB Commons and the Center for the Arts.

Dates and Hours

Lake LaSalle is typically open for boating from April until November, weather permitting.

  • For students, faculty and staff using UB boats: 4 p.m. - dusk (approximately 30 minutes before sunset)
  • For those using their own boats: dawn to dusk (approximately 30 minutes before sunset)

Boat Use Rules

First-time paddlers must take part in a short instructional-based session regarding the rules, regulations and safety. Paddling instruction is available to those who do not know how to paddle; student staff will be on site during posted hours of operation – weather permitting)

  • Boating hours are from dawn to dusk
  • Only water crafts with no motors may be used on the lake
  • All boaters must adhere to NYS Boating Regulations
  • Lake usage is at your own risk; when boating you must be 17 years of age or older or accompanied by an adult
  • It is advised that all boaters enter and exit the lake at the boat dock
  • All boaters must wear US Coast Guard Approved Life Jacket which must be properly worn and secured on the water
  • Each boating party must carry a cell phone in a plastic bag for emergencies
  • Do not disturb any wildlife
  • No littering; violators are subject to a maximum fine of $250
  • No alcoholic beverages
  • No swimming or wading
  • Rules subject to police enforcement
  • Organized events must be approved by Student Life

Cold Water Paddling Advisory

Paddling in Lake LaSalle when water temperature is below 60 degrees requires each paddler to adhere to cold water paddling protocols.

You can find copies of the ACA Cold Water Survival at the Boat Dock and outside the office of Outdoor Pursuits in the Student Union.

If you want to have an event in or on the water, please complete the Lake LaSalle Usage Form on UBLinked.

Ice Skating

Skate for free at the North Campus outdoor ice skating rink, located in the Special Events field across from the Student Union. Skating is free for all UB community members with a current UB Card.

Free Loaner Ice Skates

You can use your current UB Card to borrow ice skates from the rink-side hut.

Dates and Hours

6 p.m. – 10 p.m. daily, weather permitting

Ice Skating Rules

  • Current UB ID is required
  • Use of the rink is for the UB community members only
  • Skaters must sign a waiver prior to skating
  • Use of the rink is permitted only during posted hours
  • Skaters must observe rules and obey Ice Manager at all times
  • Skaters must skate in the same direction
  • No horseplay
  • During open skate, ice skates must be worn
  • No food or beverages permitted on the ice
  • Gloves, hats and/or helmets are recommended
  • Scheduled use of the ice is subject to change
  • Usage of the rink is at your own risk

Private Event Rental

You can also rent the ice rink for a private event. If you are interested, please complete the Ice Rink Rental Form.

Disc Golf

Enjoy playing on this open course, conveniently located on North Campus between the Bookstore and Greiner Hall.
