Showing Students the Way to Work

Temara Cross, U B Student Engagement.

As a student assistant in the Office of Student Engagement and a Campus Health Ambassador, Temara Cross is gaining experience she needs, while working on campus.

Finding the Right Fit

When Temara attended the On Campus Job Fair during Welcome Week, she had no idea the opportunities that would lie ahead. She applied and earned the Student Assistant position where she was able to make an immediate impact. “I’m always meeting new people who stop into the office,” says Temara. “Whether I am helping fellow students navigate the campus Learning Lab, or providing guidance about campus activities, I feel more connected to my peers and the campus itself. It’s more than just a job.”

“There are so many ways to get involved. Working on-campus has helped me step out of my comfort zone and become part of the UB community.”

Encouraging Campus Participation

Working on campus still leaves time for school work and other activities. “My supervisor really supported my participation in other activities across campus, even telling me about things she thought would interest me.” Through this encouragement Temara became a Campus Health Educator where she works to educate the UB community on organ donation and seeks participation for the organ donation registry drive – something that directly coincides with her goal of becoming a doctor.

Managing Class and Work

If Temara could give advice to students thinking about applying for on-campus employment, she says: “Do it. I’ve gained a lot of confidence and have enhanced my communication skills through my on-campus jobs. I’ve been able to use those same skills in class, while working with my peers and professors.” There are a number of workshops available to student employees, including time management, resume building, networking and more. Plus, working on campus allows for easy commuting and working around your class schedule.
