The University at Buffalo (UB), State University of New York (SUNY), invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Dental Medicine (SDM). The SDM is one of the five schools in the UB Academic Health Center. The University at Buffalo is the most comprehensive, research-intensive university within the SUNY system, and is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU).
The Dean of the School of Dental Medicine is a senior member of the leadership of the UB Academic Health Center which includes the Schools of Dental Medicine, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,, and Public Health and Health Professions. The Dean reports directly to and will work collaboratively with the Vice President for Health Sciences, the leadership of the four other health professional schools as well as the faculty of SDM in order to build the school and make significant contributions towards the University of Buffalo’s initiatives and missions.
The Dean’s responsibilities include providing leadership within the SDM in order to fulfill the strategic plan in expanding the school’s growth in faculty size and research accomplishments. Additionally, candidates must possess strong communication and management skills with the ability to collaborate with university leadership and faculty as well as the regional health care community which includes affiliated hospitals and clinics, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and the NYS Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. Candidates must have earned a D.D.S or D.M.D or equivalent degree and demonstrated experience in research, teaching, and service and also achieved the rank of full professor in a major research university. Additional earned degrees (M.S., Ph.D., M.D. DMSc, MBA) are preferred but not required. Candidates must demonstrate successful administrative experience such as departmental chair, institute director, associate dean, or comparable experience.
Since its establishment in 1892, the UB SDM has demonstrated a legacy of excellence in education, research, patient care and service. As a key element of one of the nation’s premier centers of academic excellence, located in the Buffalo-Niagara region of the state, the SDM is poised to make significant contributions to the community as well as the profession.
The primary mission of the SDM at the University at Buffalo is to educate oral health care professionals, biomedical scientists and educators; to discover medical and biological knowledge; and to deliver high-quality, state-of the-art oral health care. Currently, one of the SDM’s major goals is to redesign and renovate the clinical facilities in order to better implement translational research programs. Within this plan is to expand the current electronic dental record, implant research center and clinical simulation facility.
The SDM today has 75 full-time, 105 part-time and 104 volunteer faculty members. The SDM educates approximately 350 DDS students, 20 General Dentistry residents, and 80 students of advanced specialty programs. Additionally, the School trains PhD students in Oral Biology one of the first programs of its kind in the US which won the prestigious Gies Award for Innovation and Excellence in 2009. The school received 2,215 applications for the class of 2012, which is an increase of 214 from the previous year for 89 positions. The students come from 60 different colleges and universities with a mean total GPA of 3.61. The SDM enjoys an internationally renowned reputation for pioneering research and exemplary scholarship in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral disease.
