Student Research in Addiction Sciences Open House 2017

The Research Institute on Addictions hosted its second Student Research in Addiction Sciences Open House on April 21.

Nearly 30 undergraduate and graduate students presented posters about their research activities working with UB scientists in the areas of substance use, abuse and addiction sciences. Held in conjuction with UB’s Discovery Week, the Open House showcased the broad range of interdisciplinary addictions research taking place at UB.

The students' research was conducted under the guidance and mentorship of faculty and research scientists from not only RIA, but also the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Public Health and Health Professions and Graduate School of Education.

The poster presentations covered a wide-ranging number of different substances, including opioids, alcohol, cocaine, tobacco and prescription drugs, and addressed topics such as naloxone administration by emergency personnel in opioid overdoses, interventions to reduce college sexual assault, the influence of socioeconomic factors on alcohol treatment, various neural and behavioral mechanisms underlying addiction, and the interaction of substance use and family relationships.

Organized by the RIA Education Committee – Amy Hequembourg, PhD, Christopher Barrick, PhD, and Alexis Thompson, PhD.
