Implementing the changes

The presentation provides a good overview for faculty.

The FLSA changes could affect non-teaching researchers and other project staff members who are professionals earning less than $47,476 annually or $913 a week. It also has budget implications for faculty members and investigators with current grants and those seeking future grants.

UB's human relations officers say the federal government has gone 12 years without raising the threshold salary and now has jumped it to $47, 476. Supervisors with professional scientists, researchers and professional project staff members earning less than that amount will have to consider salary increases, adjustments to the work schedules or paying overtime for the additional hours worked.

  • Postdocs, residents and fellows likely will be affected by the changes.
  • Teaching assistants and graduate students are exempt from these changes.

University officials are working with the supervisors as they make their decisions on how to comply with the law. HR personnel will follow up those discussions by contacting the affected employees.
