This faculty orientation program covers a broad range of topics to help you get started. Intended for new faculty researchers, post-docs and research support staff, the focus is on how to:

  • Identify funding opportunities
  • Articulate an innovative idea
  • Write a strong proposal
  • Develop a basic budget
  • Meet compliance related requirements and all attendant details regarding internal routing, approvals and electronic submission

NSF CAREER Planning Meeting - Session 1

This session will benefit researchers interested in obtaining NSF CAREER funding. Previous awardees share their insights gained from experiences in applying for and receiving this prestigious award. ORA staff members will discuss the nuances of writing a successful proposal, budget basics and a submission checklist. They also will talk about UB resources available for managing proposals and editing services. This session is intended for early career researchers wanting to apply for NSF CAREER Awards.

Writing and Publishing High-Impact Research Manuscripts

Given the importance of a successful publication record to the advancement of a researcher's career, proper guidance in manuscript preparation is essential. This workshop systematically lays out how to think about and write each section of a scientific manuscript. These step-by-step directions should facilitate the task of manuscript preparation and help authors avoid many of the common pitfalls that lead to manuscript rejection. The workshop will address:

  • How to identify co-authors
  • Select the right journal for manuscript submission 
  • Relate to editors 
  • Respond to reviewers 
  • Avoid conflicts of interest

This workshop is intended for anyone interested in improving his/her manuscript writing skills, including early-career faculty, researchers, post-docs and graduate students.

There is a $100 seminar cost, which includes a workbook: "Writing for Biomedical Publication – A Publication Guide for Biomedical Scientists." We will not collect the fee upon registration, but will collect it from each department’s dean’s office at a later date. Participants should contact their department chair, faculty mentor, or unit head to obtain clarity on who will cover the cost.

NIH Fellowships

This workshop focuses on F31 and F32 submissions. Presenters will offer tips to help you prepare a competitive application, follow the checklist and develop a timeline for your submission. You also will learn about pre-award services available through the ORA and Sponsored Projects Services (SPS). This workshop is intended for graduate students and early postdoctoral fellows.

IES Application Workshop

This workshop will benefit researchers interested in obtaining funding from IES. The session will introduce proposal writing that targets IES. Participants will develop and draft a statement of purpose, significance and specific aims for peer review and feedback. Presenters will provide a timeline, checklist and templates for required supporting documents as well as an overview of the IES budget. This workshop is intended for faculty applying for IES grants.
