Sir Donald Acheson to address "Health Under Fire" today during two-day visit to UB

Sir Donald Acheson, former special representative for humanitarian relief of the World Health Organization for the former Yugoslavia and Chechyna, will speak on the topic "Health Under Fire: Belfast, Bosnia and Beyond" at 4:30 p.m. today in Butler Auditorium of Farber Hall on the South Campus.

Acheson's appearance is sponsored by the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine and Beth Moscato, a research assistant professor in the department.

Currently chair of the International Centre for Health and Safety, University College, London, Acheson has served as chief medical officer of England and past president of the British Medical Association. He headed the United Kingdom delegation to the World Health Organization and has been chair of the "Independent Inquiry into Inequities in Health." Acheson was knighted for the role he has played in health and health policy with the United Kingdom and internationally.

Acheson will spend two days at UB. In addition to his lecture, he will lead an informal discussion on issues related to inequities in health from 12:30­1:30 p.m. tomorrow in 182 Farber Hall.

Both events are free and open to the public.
