Faculty proposals win educational-technology grants
Eighteen faculty members have won educational-technology grants for their proposals for the development of information-technology applications in the classroom. The awards, given for the 1999-2000 year, place emphasis on introductory-level courses preparatory to the inauguration of the Access99 initiative. The program was sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Educational Technology.
The winners and their awards are:

- Ann Bisantz and Victor Paquet, assistant professors, Department of Industrial Engineering, "Use of CAD to Enhance Undergraduate Human Factors Engineering Laboratories," $9,995
- Carrie Bramen, assistant professor, Department of English, "Developing an Online Interactive Class Syllabus for UGC 211 American Pluralism," $1,000
- Stuart Chen, associate professor, Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, "Transforming CAD Instruction," $5,200
- William Gavin, clinical assistant professor, Department of Occupational Therapy, "Expanding on the HRP Access Initiative," $9,981
- Larry Hawk, assistant professor, Department of Psychology, "Development of 'Psych 101' for Access99 Readiness," $10,000
- Wassim Jabi, assistant professor, Department of Architecture, "The Use of Virtual Reality Imaging for Instructional and Design Exploration Purposes," $9,935
- Maureen Jameson, associate professor, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, "Digitally Recreating Foreign Language Texts for Introductory-Level Courses in French, German, Italian and Spanish,"$10,000
- Elka Kazmierczak, assistant professor, Department of Art, image development and manipulation, $4,887
- Leslie McCain, educational technology specialist, College of Arts and Sciences, "Supplemental Self-Paced Multimedia Learning Tools in College of Arts and Sciences Introductory Statistics Courses," $9,940
- Donald McGuire, director of humanities services, Undergraduate Academic Programs and Services, College of Arts and Sciences, to construct a common Web site for "World Civilization" course sections, $9,200
- Dennis Pietras, laboratory director, Department of Biological Sciences, to develop cybertext and cyberlabs for "Biology 103" and "Biology 104," $9,600
- Tony Rozak, associate professor, Department of Art, "Multimedia Literacy," $9,002
- Mark Swihart, assistant professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, "Incorporation of Graphical Programming and Automated Data Acquisition into the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Laboratories," $9,800
- Shahin Vassigh, assistant professor, Department of Architecture, "Teaching Structures Through Multimedia: An Interactive Exploration of Structural Concepts Using Digital Technology," $9,100
- Richard Vesley, associate professor, and Jonathan Bell, professor, Department of Mathematics, "Online Calculus Tutoring: An Access99 Project," $6,950
- Leslie Walker, curator, Department of Art History, "Art History Resources on the Internet and Technology at UB," $849
