Organ recital opens spring concert schedule; Exciting performances planned for Slee/Beethoven Cycle,

February brings a series of exciting music performances to the campus, including concerts from the Organ Recital Series, the Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle and the Slee Visiting Artist Series.

A concert on Sunday, featuring Roland E. Martin, organ, with Kevin Michki, violin, and Bryan Eckenrode, cello, leads off the Department of Music spring semester concert schedule. Part of the Organ Recital Series, the program will be presented at 5 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall.

Martin, a member of the UB music faculty, has played recitals in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Germany and England. Tickets are $8, $6, $5 and $2.

Other events:

Feb. 5: Friedemann Sallis from the Université de Montcon, New Brunswick, Canada, will lecture in 211 Baird Hall at 4 p.m. on "Umberto Eco's Opera aperta and Fragmentary Form in the Late Work of Luigi Nono." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Feb. 13: the Magellan String Quartet appears in Concert IV of the Slee/Beethoven Cycle at 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. The quartet has appeared in Lincoln Center, the Aspen Music Festival and the Caramoor Music Festival. Tickets are $10, $8, $5 and $4.

Feb. 21: the Brentano String Quartet gives Concert V in the Slee/Beethoven Cycle at 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. The quartet, singled out for its technical brilliance and stylistic elegance, has been chosen by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to participate in the inaugural season of Chamber Music Society Two, a program designed for outstanding emerging artists. Tickets are $10, $8, $5 and $4.

Feb. 22: William Porter will give Concert IV in the Organ Recital Series at 5 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. Porter is widely known as a leader among organists working toward a recovery of an historical approach to musical performance, incorporating early technical practice and improvisation. The concert is co-sponsored by the Buffalo chapter, American Guild of Organists. Tickets are $8, $6, $5 and $2.

Feb. 27: Juliane Banse, soprano, appears in Concert IV of the Slee Visiting Artist Series at 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. Banse is a gifted singer who is on her first American recital tour. Tickets are $10, $8, $5 and $4.
