TRACK TEAMS FINISH SECOND AT MOUNT ST. MARY'S MEET

The Bulls and Royals track and field teams finished second in the seven-team Mount St. Mary's Invitational Meet held in Emmittsburg, Md., on Saturday. Both squads finished behind the host Mountaineers, with the Bulls scoring 96 points and the Royals scoring 132.

Freshman distance specialist Patrick Nolan took the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Bulls, winning in 9:32.4. Micah Adelstein won the hammer throw with a toss of 134-10 (41.10 meters).

The Royals were led by a record-setting performance in the hammer throw by Ruth Conlon. Conlon's toss of 160-1 (48.80 meters) eclipsed her previous school record of 159-10 set March 29 at the Raleigh Relays.

Melissa Ryan and Lisa Kragbe finished

1-2 in the 100-meter high hurdles for the Royals, with Ryan crossing the line in 14.7 and Kragbe in 15.3. Other winners for the Royals included Shelly Hamilton in the high jump

(5-3.75, 1.62 meters) and Alicia Croak in the triple jump (34-1.25, 10.39 meters).

UB's multi-event specialists were at the Millersville University Heptathlon and Decathlon in Millersville, Pa. Colleen Hart finished sixth of 19 entrants in the heptathlon with 3,777 total points. Hart captured the javelin toss at 113 feet and was third in the long jump at 15-6.25. Karyn Eichler was 10th with 3,306 points and Terry Scherne, who won the high jump (5-2.25) and placed third in the 100 hurdles (15.57), pulled out of the competition after the first day and finished 18th overall.

The Bulls received an eighth-place performance from Matt Streng with 5,696 points and a ninth-place finish by Ben Atkinson with 5,670 points in the decathlon. Scott Masters finished 17th overall with 5,083, winning the pole vault competition at 13-7. Twenty-two decathletes completed the two-day competition.

Both squads are off this weekend.

BULLS TENNIS SWEEPS ROBERT MORRIS AND YOUNGSTOWN STATE

Although inclement weather forced the Bulls' men's tennis team indoors to play their final two regular-season dual matches of the year, UB swept past Robert Morris (7-0) and Youngs-town State (6-1) to move to 8-11 overall.

Mike Minter led the way for Coach Russ Crispell's team, winning both matches at number one singles. Minter's 7-6, 6-1 victory over Youngstown State's Vince Hill paid back Hill's win over Minter when the Bulls and Penguins met in October at UB. Senior Mike Proulx at number two singles rolled to a pair of wins in the final regular-season dual meet matches in his career.

Also winning both their singles matches on Saturday were number three Onke Murdono, number four Andrew Garber and number five Travis Melnik.

The Bulls are back in action in two weeks when they travel to Chicago for the Mid-Continent Conference Championships.

ROYALS SPLIT WEEKEND TENNIS ACTION; HEAD TO KANSAS CITY FOR MID-CONS

The Royals also moved inside on Saturday for their matches at Robert Morris and Youngstown State. UB lost to Robert Morris 4-3 but rebounded to earn a key Mid-Continent Conference victory over Youngstown State 6-1 in their regular-season dual meet finale. Coach Kathy Twist's club is now 6-10 this season.

Two Royals swept their matches to lead the team on Saturday. Danielle Rakowsky downed both her opponents in straight sets at number five, while April Kiser also took two straight set wins at number six, including a

6-0, 6-0 "double bageling" of Robert Morris' Chris Ciufo.

With the regular season complete, the Royals head for this weekend's Mid-Continent Tournament in Kansas City. With a 6-10 overall mark, the Royals are expecting a seeding in the middle of the nine-team field.
