Inflatable sculpture in Lightwell

Takashi Murakami's "Mr. Dob" is a 40-foot-high inflatable sculpture commissioned for the Lightwell Gallery and on view there through July 13. The sculpture, which in its cartoon-like design is both playful and menacing, is part of an ongoing project by the Japanese artist. The Lightwell Gallery is located within the University at Buffalo Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. There is an opening reception for the artist April 10 from 5-7 p.m. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday Noon-5 p.m. Admission is free.

New paintings by Sheldon Berlyn

"Sheldon Berlyn: New Work" continues through June 8 in the UB Art Gallery, Center for the Arts, North Campus. A concurrent show of Berlyn's new work will be on view April 27-June 1 at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University. UB Art Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday Noon-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Paintings by Sunah Kim

A master of fine arts thesis exhibit of paintings by Sunah Kim opens April 11 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. in the Art Department Gallery located in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. The show continues through April 22. Art Department Gallery hours are Tuesday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is free.

Exhibit of books and manuscripts

"Wislawa Szymborska: A Search for the Word," an exhibition of books, manuscripts, memorabilia, and photos relating to the Nobel Laureate poet, is on display through April 24 in the Poetry/Rare Book Room, 420 Capen Hall, North Campus. The exhibition originated at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and is presented here in conjunction with the Second Conference on Polish Studies in America to be held April 12 and 13. Poetry room hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Student art for sale

A sale of two-dimensional art works by graduate and undergraduate students is scheduled April 18 from Noon-4 p.m., and April 19 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Atrium and the Art Department Gallery, Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Student photo show

"Social Photography: The Meld," an exhibit of photographs by students, is on view through April 11 in the Oscar A. Silverman Undergraduate Library (UGL) on the first floor of Capen Hall, North Campus. The exhibit features black-and-white photographs by Jennifer Bonheim, Linda Mutka, Haniel Rodney, and Renee Ziegler, students in a social photography course taught by David Gordon. Design exhibit

"Cannon," curated by Christopher Less of Cannon Design, is on display through April 18 in the James Dyett Gallery, 334 Hayes Hall, South Campus. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Reserve lists reminder

Reserve lists for the summer sessions are now due. Forms are available at the reserve desks of the university libraries. Deadline for the fall semester is Aug. 1.

Oozfest forces road closing

St. Rita's Lane will be closed to all but emergency vehicles on April 26 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. during Oozfest.

Retirement system seminar

A one-day New York State Employees' Retirement System Seminar will be held June 6 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Center for Tomorrow, North Campus. There will be one session for Tier 1 and 2 members, and another for Tier 3 and 4 members. There will be representatives from the Social Security Administration, the Dept. of Civil Service, and the company that administers the New York State Deferred Compensation Program.
